A pergola or canopy enquiry should start with a coordinated design brief, especially where the frame interacts with an existing building, external finishes or a separate covering system. Appearance is one part of the discussion. Design responsibility, exposure, interfaces and site access also need to be settled before a dependable fabrication proposal can be prepared.
Identify the complete assembly
Explain the intended use and identify the components included in the project. A frame-only quotation differs from a package that also includes roof coverings, drainage-related coordination, lighting interfaces or other elements. Name the parties responsible for those items and the project designer responsible for confirming suitability. This helps prevent the same reference image from being interpreted as several different scopes by different suppliers.
Provide site and design information
Share drawings, levels, available support information and photographs of the installation area. Record which existing conditions are verified and which need further investigation by the project team. The responsible designer should address the applicable structural and environmental requirements. Do not treat a preliminary sketch or a supplier’s approximate price as a substitute for that design review or the project’s required approvals.
Plan the release and installation sequence
Agree which drawings and finish samples must be approved before materials are ordered and fabrication starts. Discuss delivery, lifting access, working areas and protection of existing finishes. Include the coordination needed with other trades and the documents required at handover. The programme should reflect these dependencies so that the frame is not fabricated around dimensions or interfaces that are still changing.
