Mezzanine Planning: Questions to Resolve Before Fabrication
A mezzanine proposal should be developed around an approved use and a reviewed design, rather than treated as a simple way to add a floor. The client needs to establish the relevant project responsibilities and approval path before ordering steelwork. A clear early brief gives the designer and fabricator a common understanding of the proposed work.
Define the intended use
Explain what activities, storage or equipment the area is intended to accommodate. Identify the responsible structural and other relevant project professionals and the information they require. Requirements relating to access, building use and other applicable provisions must be reviewed by the appointed team. A preliminary layout should be described as preliminary until the necessary design decisions and approvals are complete.
Review the existing building interfaces
Collect drawings and information about the building, proposed support locations and surrounding activities. Mark areas where information is unavailable or where conditions require verification. Existing floors, foundations and structures should not be assumed suitable solely because they appear substantial. The responsible designer needs the appropriate evidence to assess the proposal, and any unresolved assumptions should be visible in the project documentation.
Coordinate the steelwork package
Once the design basis is established, define the fabrication drawings, material and finish requirements, floor-system interfaces and installation scope. Agree the sequence for access, protection and work around ongoing operations. List the inspections and handover information required. A clear boundary between the approved design and the fabrication instruction helps the workshop avoid progressing on an arrangement that may later change.
Questions to bring to your project discussion
- What is the proposed use of the mezzanine?
- Who owns the design and approval process?
- What existing-building information is available?
- Are floor, access and service interfaces coordinated?
- Which documents release the steelwork for production?
Your next step
Discuss feasibility with the responsible project professionals before requesting a final fabrication commitment. Afnan Group can review the metalwork brief around the approved project information and identify the execution scope, coordination needs and commercial assumptions.
Prepare a project brief ↗These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
