Planning Site Access for Metalwork Delivery and Installation

Afnan Group editorial guides · 3 November 2026 · 2 min read

A finished fabricated item still needs a practical route from the workshop to its final position. Delivery and installation planning should therefore form part of the enquiry and programme. Access restrictions, working areas and coordination with other trades can affect how the item is divided, packaged, transported and installed, even when the fabrication itself is straightforward.

Describe the route and restrictions

Share information about entrances, loading areas, internal routes and the final installation location. Identify access times, permits arranged by the project team and any restrictions imposed by the property or site management. Photographs help explain conditions, but dimensions and requirements should be verified where they affect the method. Avoid assuming that the access available during a survey will remain available throughout the programme.

Coordinate handling and site readiness

Agree who provides the appropriate unloading, lifting and access arrangements and who reviews the safe method for the work. Confirm the readiness of supports and adjacent surfaces. Identify nearby operations and finishes requiring protection. These decisions need the responsible site professionals and should be reflected in the agreed scope rather than left for the delivery team to negotiate after arrival.

Make completion criteria clear

State when delivery will be accepted, who signs the relevant records and what inspection follows installation. Record any damage or missing item promptly with photographs and an agreed reference. Confirm the treatment of packaging, temporary protection and making good. A coordinated completion process gives the client a clearer picture of what has arrived, what is installed and what remains to be completed.

Questions to bring to your project discussion

  • Is the full delivery route verified?
  • What access windows and management requirements apply?
  • Who arranges unloading, lifting and working access?
  • Are supports and adjacent trades ready?
  • Who records delivery acceptance and remaining work?

Your next step

Share access information with your metalwork enquiry rather than treating it as an installation-day detail. Afnan Group can discuss delivery and execution coordination around the actual project conditions and the responsibilities agreed with the site team.
