A Site Measurement Checklist for Bespoke Metalwork

Afnan Group editorial guides · 3 November 2026 · 2 min read

Measuring for bespoke metalwork is an exercise in understanding the surrounding conditions, not merely recording the width of an opening. Finishes, access, fixing zones and neighbouring components can all affect the finished item. A measurement brief should explain what is known and what must be verified before fabrication dimensions are released.

Choose the right reference points

Identify the levels, lines and finished surfaces to which the item must relate. Explain whether floor, wall or ceiling finishes are already complete. If measurements are taken before finishes are installed, record the allowance that has been agreed and the party confirming it. Keep photographs that show where the measurement started and ended, rather than leaving a number without its reference.

Look beyond the main opening

Check for nearby doors, service routes, equipment and other features that could affect operation or installation. Record visible restrictions and areas that need a further check by the appropriate project professional. A survey should distinguish observation from verification: an inaccessible fixing area or concealed service should be marked as an unresolved condition, not treated as confirmed suitable because it cannot be seen.

Turn measurements into an approved instruction

Convert the survey into a drawing or clearly marked sketch for review. Identify the critical interfaces, agreed tolerances and any components that must be adjustable. Confirm who approves the final dimensions and when another survey is required if the site changes. This creates a useful connection between the information collected on site and the dimensions that the workshop will actually follow.

Questions to bring to your project discussion

  • Are the reference surfaces finished or unfinished?
  • Which levels and lines have been used?
  • What installation and operating clearances need checking?
  • Which fixing zones remain unverified?
  • Who approves the final fabrication dimensions?

Your next step

For a bespoke enquiry, send site photographs and an initial sketch, then identify whether a detailed survey is required. Afnan Group can discuss the measurement and fabrication information needed for your particular metalwork scope before production is agreed.

Prepare a project brief ↗

These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
