Why Drawing Revision Control Matters in Fabrication
A drawing revision is part of the production instruction, not just a label in a filename. When different people price, detail, fabricate and install a component, an old drawing can travel further than expected. A simple revision-control process helps everyone identify which information is current and whether it is actually released for the next stage.
Give each issue an identity
Use a drawing number, revision identifier, issue date and clear purpose such as review or fabrication. Keep the drawing register separate from a casual messaging thread. Record what changed and where the updated information should be used. A revised attachment should not be expected to replace every earlier copy automatically, especially where workshop printouts or subcontractor folders are involved.
Distinguish review from approval
Uploading a file does not mean it has been approved. Record the reviewer, the response and any outstanding comments. The project team should be able to distinguish a draft from a released fabrication revision without interpreting a conversation history. When comments require another submission, keep the returned issue and the replacement so there is a traceable explanation for the final instruction.
Retain history without creating confusion
Keep earlier revisions for reference, but make the latest approved issue obvious at the point of use. Check the drawing reference on purchase requests, job cards and site instructions. If a change arrives after fabrication has started, assess the affected work before assuming the latest file can simply be substituted. Record the decision on rework, cost and programme with the authorised project representative.
Questions to bring to your project discussion
- Is the drawing number consistent across files?
- Is the issue for review or for fabrication?
- Who recorded approval and outstanding comments?
- Have workshop and site copies been updated?
- Has the effect on work already started been assessed?
Your next step
Afnan’s project discussions can include the drawing information required for a metalwork package. Send current DWG/PDF issues with a revision list and identify the approval status of each file so the next steps can be agreed clearly.
Prepare a project brief ↗These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
