Decorative Metal Screens: From Inspiration to a Fabrication Brief
Decorative screens can define an entrance, separate areas or add visual depth to a building. Turning an attractive reference into a buildable brief requires decisions about pattern, support, finish and the way the screen relates to the surrounding space. A clear design review prevents the pattern from being considered separately from the complete assembly.
Explain the purpose of the screen
Describe whether the main objective is visual separation, decoration, privacy or another project-specific need. Share views of the surrounding area and indicate which faces will be seen. Ask the designer to review any performance requirements relevant to the location. An image that looks suitable in a lobby may need a different arrangement when proposed for an exposed exterior or a different supporting structure.
Develop the pattern and panel arrangement
Agree the pattern scale, panel breaks, border treatment and alignment with adjacent elements. Review how repeated panels meet at corners and ends rather than approving a single central sample only. Decide what should be represented in a physical mock-up and what can be reviewed through drawings. Record the approved file revision so the workshop has an unambiguous pattern and layout instruction.
Coordinate supports and care
Identify the responsibility for the support arrangement, fixing design and verification of the surrounding surfaces. Define the finish, visible fasteners and access required for cleaning or replacement. Include the delivery and installation sequence in the scope. The completed screen should be reviewed as a whole, with support and finish details receiving the same attention as the decorative pattern that first attracted the buyer.
Questions to bring to your project discussion
- What purpose must the screen serve?
- Is the pattern scale approved for the actual space?
- Are panel joints and borders resolved?
- Who confirms supports and fixing suitability?
- How will the screen be cleaned or replaced?
Your next step
Share inspiration together with location photographs and dimensions when discussing a screen. Afnan Group can review a custom metal design and execution brief and identify the samples, drawings and coordination needed before fabrication is released.
Prepare a project brief ↗These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
