Comparing Material Concepts for Parametric Interiors

Afnan Group editorial guides · 3 November 2026 · 2 min read

The same parametric geometry can create a different impression when proposed in timber, metal or another material concept. Material decisions should therefore be reviewed with the form, setting and intended design deliverables. A visually convincing reference does not establish fabrication suitability, so the appointed execution specialists need to review the practical requirements before production is committed.

Define the design priorities

Explain whether the main objective is a particular visual rhythm, surface appearance, depth or relationship with light. Share views of the space and describe the parts of the concept that matter most. This helps the designer compare options around a clear purpose instead of changing materials simply because several references look attractive. Keep the agreed priorities with the design brief as the concept develops.

Review samples in context

Compare samples and visual studies against the actual surrounding finishes and viewing conditions. Discuss joints, edges and transitions, not just the central material surface. If the concept must match existing work, identify the reference clearly. Ask the proposed fabricator or relevant specialist to review production and execution considerations before a design assumption is treated as an approved construction detail.

Document what is approved

Record the approved concept, material direction and design revision, along with the information still requiring specialist development. Agree the drawings, profiles, schedules or visualisations included in the design appointment. A useful handover distinguishes the designer’s intent from the separate responsibilities for engineering, fabrication, procurement and installation. That distinction helps the client plan the next stage without assuming all delivery services are included.

Questions to bring to your project discussion

  • Which visual qualities are the priorities?
  • Have samples been compared with surrounding finishes?
  • Are joints and edges part of the review?
  • Who assesses fabrication and execution suitability?
  • Are design intent and execution responsibilities separated?

Your next step

Afnan Group can discuss material concepts as part of its parametric design-only service. Share your references and project constraints; any metal execution requirement should be identified and scoped separately rather than assumed within the interior design appointment.

Prepare a project brief ↗

These general project-planning guides are not a project-specific engineering specification. Design suitability, applicable requirements and approvals must be established by the responsible project professionals. Afnan’s interior, architectural and parametric services are design only; metal works can be scoped for design and execution.
